Beijing labeled the claims as \u201cgroundless\u201d and vowed strong countermeasures to protect its interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump said Friday that China had violated a bilateral agreement to roll back tariffs and announced plans to <strong>double duties<\/strong> on imported <strong>steel and aluminum<\/strong> to <strong>50%<\/strong> starting <strong>Wednesday<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not quite fair to say that the U.S.-China trade deal is unraveling, but both sides clearly seem frustrated,\u201d analysts at ING noted. \u201cAn early end to the deal, which is set to expire on August 12, would hurt risk assets and weigh further on the dollar.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traders are increasingly cautious as they await key economic reports this week, particularly <strong>Friday\u2019s May nonfarm payrolls<\/strong>. The labor market report is expected to show <strong>130,000 new jobs<\/strong> added, a decline from <strong>April\u2019s<\/strong> stronger-than-expected <strong>177,000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Euro Rises Ahead of ECB Decision<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>euro<\/strong> gained ground, with <strong>EUR\/USD<\/strong> up <strong>0.7%<\/strong> at <strong>1.1430<\/strong>, supported by dollar weakness and anticipation surrounding <strong>Thursday\u2019s European Central Bank (ECB)<\/strong> meeting. The ECB is widely expected to <strong>cut interest rates by 25 basis points<\/strong> to <strong>2%<\/strong>, marking its <strong>eighth reduction<\/strong> in the past year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the rate cut seen as a given, market focus will shift to whether the <strong>ECB signals a possible pause in July<\/strong>, as recent data suggest the <strong>eurozone economy<\/strong> is holding up better than expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest <strong>HCOB Eurozone Manufacturing PMI<\/strong> rose to <strong>49.4 in May<\/strong> from <strong>49.0 in April<\/strong> \u2014 a <strong>33-month high<\/strong>, nearing stabilization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pound Gains on Strong Housing Data<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <strong>U.K.<\/strong>, <strong>GBP\/USD<\/strong> climbed <strong>0.6%<\/strong> to <strong>1.3547<\/strong>, as <strong>sterling<\/strong> drew support from stronger-than-expected housing data. <strong>Nationwide<\/strong> reported a <strong>3.5% year-on-year rise<\/strong> in <strong>house prices<\/strong> for <strong>May<\/strong>, with a <strong>monthly gain of 0.5%<\/strong>, reversing most of <strong>April\u2019s decline<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cImproved housing data could be a bright spot for the U.K. economy as rate cuts continue,\u201d ING commented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Yen Strengthens on Safe-Haven Demand<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>Asia<\/strong>, the <strong>Japanese yen<\/strong> gained ground, with <strong>USD\/JPY<\/strong> down <strong>0.8%<\/strong> at <strong>142.88<\/strong>, as investors sought safety amid rising global trade tensions and uncertainty surrounding <strong>U.S.-Japan negotiations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the <strong>USD\/CNY<\/strong> rose <strong>0.2%<\/strong> to <strong>7.1998<\/strong>, with the <strong>Chinese yuan<\/strong> slightly weaker despite a local holiday, pressured by the escalating war of words between <strong>Beijing<\/strong> and <strong>Washington<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. dollar dropped sharply on Monday, starting the week under pressure as escalating trade tensions fueled concerns over a potential economic slowdown.
